Miami's mistakes on special teams were glaring against Florida State. The Hurricanes can't have a repeat against Clemson or the Tigers will win their second straight in the series.

Miami has won a lot of games but just not enough games in the ACC. The Hurricanes may be blunted by other teams' experience against Florida State. After being pummeled for years by the Seminoles, the other ACC teams know what it takes to compete with the Florida schools. Somehow, Virginia Tech slipped under the radar and has had it made.

Miami won't let FSU get them down

Bad luck in the kicking game usually comes in the form of bad execution and that's what bit Miami on Monday night against Florida State. The Hurricanes had their chances against Florida State but botched two of them badly. Nobody feels as bad as holder Brian Monroe, who twice mishandled the ball for kicker Jon Peattie. In all, Miami missed three field goal attempts. Missing out on those points probably knocked Miami out of the national title hunt because it likely will take an undefeated run to reach the championship game.

Miami vs. Florida State. Two college football heavyweights with storied programs featuring two great coaches in Bobby Bowden and Larry Coker. Man, I wish I was going to be in Tallahassee for this one. By the way, if you've ever been to Tallahassee, you know that the only reason to go there is to watch football! Anyway, this game is going to be fun to watch but the Miami Hurricanes will make it 7 straight over the Seminoles.
Two young and inexperienced quarterbacks in FSU's Drew Weatherford, a redshirt freshman, and Miami redshirt sophomore Kyle Wright will be featured in this contest. Of the two, Wright is better, he's older, and I think he'll lead the 'Canes to at least two and possibly three touchdowns. While FSU has the home field advantage, there is always less pressure on the visiting team in huge games and that's one reason I like Miami. The other big reason, Larry Coker is simply a better coach than Bobby Bowden right now. Bowden is now 75, and while he's been outstanding for so many years, my prediction is that Coker will have his team a little better prepared.
Prediction: Miami 20, FSU 17

While
Miami has a new quarterback leading the Canes' offensive attack this year,
Florida State has turmoil. Under Rix, the program never achieved the
stability it needed to be a consistent powerhouse as it was under Weinke and
when Sexton, the designated starting QB, was diagnosed with Lyme Disease and was
relegated to the sidelines for the season, more turmoil erupted.
With little time to get their new QB ready, FSU not only has history to
battle but they also have an experience issue. For such a big game with so
much pressure, this just doesn't bode well for Florida State.
Prediction: Miami 24, FSU 17

Miami has three straight wins over FSU when the teams open the season against each other. That sounds good for Miami again.

Was last year a blip for Miami or was the move to the ACC more than expected? Expectations never are low in Coral Gables and now the Hurricanes will try to return to prominence. After dominating the Big East and regularly playing in BCS bowl games, the Hurricanes missed the party and finished third in the ACC.
To turn it around, head coach Larry Coker has 14 returning starters. But two positions where there will be new starters are quarterback and tailback. Kyle Wright gets his first work under center against Florida State and Tyrone Moss hopes to put a disappointing 2004 behind him.
Miami has to get wins in its first two games against Florida State and Clemson on the road to set up another national championship run.
